Class Experience

This four session course is designed to cover the twelve principles of design. It's geared towards any student interested in art and design. The learners are not required to have any prerequisites prior to joining the course.  I employ a visual teaching approach and therefore each lecturer will be conducted via slides showing examples.  I encourage all of my students to interact and actively participate in class discussions and ask questions throughout. 

All quizzes will be conducted via Kahoot! and a link to the quiz will be provided during class. (The student does not require a Kahoot! account to join the quiz)

The course will be structured as the follows:

Session 1 will focus on the following principles of design:
a) Contrast 
b) Balance - Symmetry, Asymmetry  & Radial Symmetry
c) Emphasis

In session 1, the learners will learn and discuss and look at examples of how Contrast, Balance and Emphasis is defined in it's purest form in design. We will also discuss how they are used in real world by looking at examples such as print / digital media, products and architecture.

Session 1 will be accompanied by a quiz and an informal assessment to review the learners understanding of the topic. Homework will be given at the end of each session where the learners must demonstrate their use of one more principles of design covered on the day.

Session 2:
a) Proportion
b) Hierarchy
c) Repetition 

In session 2, the learners will learn and discuss and look at examples of how Proportion, Hierarchy and Repetition is defined in it's purest form in design. We will also discuss how they are used in real world by looking at examples such as print / digital media, products and architecture.

Session 2 will be accompanied by a quiz and an informal assessment to review the learners understanding of the topic. Homework will be given at the end of each session where the learners must demonstrate their use of one more principles of design covered on the day.

Session 3:
a) Rhythm
b) Pattern
c) White Space

In session 3, the learners will learn and discuss and look at examples of how Rhythm, Pattern and White Space is defined in it's purest form in design. We will also discuss how they are used in real world by looking at examples such as  print / digital media, products and architecture.

Session 3 will be accompanied by a quiz and an informal assessment to review the learners understanding of the topic. Homework will be given at the end of each session where the learners must demonstrate their use of one more principles of design covered on the day.

Session 4:
a) Movement
b) Variety
c) Unity

In session 3, the learners will learn and discuss and look at examples of how Movement, Variety and Unity is defined in it's purest form in design. We will also discuss how they are used in real world by looking at examples such as  print / digital media, products and architecture.

Session 3 will be accompanied by a quiz and an informal assessment to review the learners understanding of the topic. Homework will be given at the end of each session where the learners must demonstrate their use of one more principles of design covered on the day.

Parental Guidance
All quizzes will be conducted via Zoom and/or on Kahoot! A link to the quiz will be provided during class. The student does not require a Kahoot! account to join the quiz. However, a parent or guardian may need to assist the learner to join the quiz. I will be using screen share to show examples of the use of design principles in printed/digital media, products and architecture. All example images i will be sharing will be age appropriate for the learners.
