Class Experience

US Grade 3 - 12
Online tutoring instruction is customized to each student's strengths and needs. It can help students improve study habits and develop critical thinking strategies. It encourages students' independence by building confidence and success in academic areas as well as social-emotional growth. Tutoring is open to any learner.

I enjoy working with students with disabilities, especially students who love learning but have not had good experiences in a formal school setting.

INDIVIDUALIZED CONTENT
I will base my instruction on the needs of the student pulling from online resources designed to help struggling or disengaged learners. We may use online activities, work with a printed packet, play games, or use a journal to meet the learner's goals.

IEPs, 504s, or other areas of need
I can also meet individual needs based on homeschool curriculum needs or IEPs (Individualized Education Plans).

Homework
Students may bring their own homework with their questions and concerns.

CLASS FORMAT
The class will begin with a greeting and a review of past concepts as applicable. There will be approximately 15-20 minutes of new instruction with 15-20 minutes of application of material. This may include problem sets, fill-in-the-blank, open-ended questions, games, or even sing-along videos. Students should have a dedicated notebook and pencil for every class.

LESSON PLANNING
Each class is scheduled for 45 minutes of instruction and may include additional homework or home practice as requested. Students who need a shorter class time may request sessions of 30 minutes each.

Students will be expected to have their video and audio on the entire class. Please find a quiet area in the house to have a class. Parents may be nearby but should remain offscreen per Outschool policy.

I am also a preferred provider in Florida for the Gardiner Scholarship as well as a provider through ESA funds.
Learning Goals
Student goals will be identified from the first session and evaluated each session.

Parental Guidance
I may use carefully curated videos and resources within Nearpod. I will use Nearpod in teacher-directed mode which means students watch through my shared screen and participate through annotation. Nearpod is an approved third-party educational tool. It is rated as excellent through Common Sense Education. You may see their review here: https://www.commonsense.org/education/app/nearpod. I may also use appropriate youtube videos to help build an understanding of concepts. I may also use Readworks through a shared screen. Students may elect to have their own student account for additional reading assignments and activities. ReadWorks is a free website offering research-based strategies and resources for differentiated reading instruction, specifically comprehension. There's a range of fiction and nonfiction texts, activities, and assessments as well as an online platform teachers can use to track student progress.
Supply List
Students should have some type of notebook or folder to hold their materials. Ideally, students would have access to a pencil, color pencils or crayons, or even a whiteboard with a marker. I can offer suggestions for the type of composition notebook based on a handwriting assessment.

As a former Special Education teacher and over 25 years of working with neurodiverse students, I have a large "toolbox" of proven strategies to help students regain their confidence in themselves and learning. I believe every student is able to learn and use whatever means I can to help them be successful. However, I measure success by progression, not perfection.

I am a lifelong reader and love to explore the world through books. I have training in Orton-Gillingham, Heggerty, and the Science of Reading and modify the curriculum to fit individual needs.
