Homework
1-2 hours per week. To improve hand drumming skills, students will be encouraged to practice techniques at least 15 minutes a day.Class Experience
Interested in learning how to play a hand drum like the Middle Eastern doumbek or the African djembe? In this private 1:1 class, beginner hand drum players will learn the fundamentals of hand drumming! Specifically, students will learn: • proper posture and breathing. • hand placement for the first three types of strokes. For the doumbek, this will be the tek, the kah, and the doom. For the djembe, this will be the tone and the base. • simple rhythms based on these strokes. The FIRST session will be geared to proper posture, hand placement, and creating sounds. Subsequent sessions will build on those skills to create simple rhythms based on these strokes. Depending on the unique needs of your student, we will continue to learn other types of strokes and more complex rhythms. PLEASE NOTE: My schedule is flexible, so feel free to contact me if there is a better time for your student to meet.
Learning Goals
Beginning students will learn how to play simple beats and rhythms on the Middle Eastern doumbek or the African djembe.

Teacher expertise and credentials
2 Degrees
Master's Degree in Education from Fordham University
Bachelor's Degree in Education from Lehman College/CUNY (my surname at the time was Snyder)
As “The Percussion Lady,” I have been teaching specialty hand drumming and rhythm classes and workshops for all ages, from preschool through adult, for over 20 years. For my private and small group sessions, I have always striven for an engaging and enlightening experience!
My overall philosophy and outlook: I wholeheartedly believe that every single person on the planet has some form of innate rhythm—however it comes across—and I endeavour to engender that love in everyone I meet. There is an African saying, which I’ll paraphrase: If you have a voice, you can sing; if you have feet, you can dance; and if you have hands, you can drum. We are therefore all singers, dancers, and drummers!!
