Class Experience

In this private lesson workshop, the student will learn new skills to help them grow in their guitar playing. Every student will have lessons tailored to her or his individual skill level and interests.

Topics may include:
- beginner basics
- reading music
- playing scales
- music theory
- right hand techniques
- open tunings
- songwriting

Typically, class is structured with hand and finger warm-ups and exercises first, followed by work on chords and right-hand techniques (such as strumming patterns and/or fingerpicking theory and techniques), followed by learning how to apply all of those practiced techniques to learn to play a song. Students are encouraged to think of a song that they would like to learn!

Owning a guitar is required, either acoustic or electric. Owning a tuner or downloading a tuning app is strongly recommended.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi, I'm David Castagner, or as the kids call me Mr. Guitar!
I have always had a passion for music and teaching.  I first started playing music at the age of three, when I would take all the pots and pans out of the kitchen cabinets and bang on them like drums (much to my mother’s chagrin).  From there I moved on to piano, and then bass guitar.   Over the years, I have learned to play many instruments, including guitar, drums, tuba, orchestral percussion… anything I could get my hands on.

I studied classical music Composition at McGill University in Montreal.  After my “serious” studies were concluded, I moved to Hollywood to be a part of the music scene, playing in various rock bands all over town.   While working at a music store, I met my wife Jennifer, who hired me to play bass in her band.  We now own and operate One Story Creations together, a performing arts studio for kids.

I love to teach, and have always been more than willing to share what I know with anyone who asks.  I am very patient and think that learning should be fun and not a chore.   I have been teaching music for over 18 years.
