US Grade 3 - 6
Intermediate Level
During this engaging 1:1 stand-alone class that connects reading and writing, students will read a high-interest non-fiction text and practice answering a main idea writing prompt. We will begin by choosing an article from a list of personalized, high-interest topics for your learner. We then pre-read the prompt to clarify the purpose of reading. As we read, we will highlight and discuss the development of the main idea and supporting evidence. We also practice secondary objectives such as vocabulary, inferring, and questioning. As we move on to answering the prompt, we will write a topic sentence to state our main idea. We then discuss the best evidence to use and practice paraphrasing and quoting our resources. To set ourselves apart and to earn a high mark on a rubric when we elaborate on our details to further support the main idea. Furthermore, we will use transition words to organize our writing for the reader. Finally, and a part that students generally struggle with, we will present a concluding sentence that wraps up our written response. A shared Google document will be used to create the written response. After each session, the guardian will receive a reading running record, learner work example, and comments. Please sign up for as many classes as you would like. Each class would feature a new non-fiction passage, and we would continue reinforcing the learning objectives with more challenging tasks, such as identifying two main ideas in a text. I am a fun, exciting, engaging, patient, and understanding educator who enjoys teaching and learning. This attitude is evident in my classes! No boring teachers allowed! Jubilant Tutoring strives to offer all learners a safe, friendly, encouraging, growth-bound environment. My teaching strategy is to facilitate the group, leaving most of the discussion to the young learners and letting them take the wheel often. Sharing ideas, thoughts, and questions is highly encouraged, and piggybacking off others is often met with applause. I have practiced literacy groups in the upper elementary school classroom for over 20 years and have mastered facilitating an enjoyable, fun, engaging, and educational learning group where positive attitudes rule and friendly smiles are abundant. Please check out my suggested prelude class, The Golden Key: How to Read & Write a Non-Fiction Expository Rubric. Class Schedule: 1) 10-15 min, read passage 2) 25-30 min, create a short constructed main idea response 3) 5 min, wrap up and celebrate!

A class account code will be provided to Newsela or ReadWorks before or during the session. While most articles are appropriate for the suggested age level (both are reputable educational websites), the host understands that some topics may be considered sensitive for some. Therefore, thought will be given to the appropriateness of the chosen passage for the age level of the learner.
Other passages may be suggested during the session if needed.

Bachelor's Degree in Education from Metropolitan University of Denver
Welcome to my class! Spring 2023 is the time for new challenges, and after spending over 20 years in the classroom, I am excited to begin my journey with Outschool. After graduating high school, I decided I wanted to do something in life that would bring me joy daily. I narrowed it down to becoming a firefighter or an educator, and since I was afraid of heights and enjoyed learning, I decided to stay in the classroom. Each day of teaching still brings me joy, and I would be happy if you joined me on this learning adventure.
I obtained a bachelor's degree in Elementary Education from the Metropolitan State University of Denver in 2002 and an Educational Technology master’s degree from the University of Northern Colorado in 2010. I spent over 20 years in the upper elementary classroom and specialized in teaching language arts for ten of those years. I also have ten years of private tutoring experience and have tutored online since 2020. I specialize and enjoy digging deep into and discussing a good book with a group of young learners and building upon the reading/writing connection. I work with students from ages 8-13 (upper elementary to middle school skill level).
My students would describe me as a fun, humorous, positive, and engaging educator who brings learning enjoyment. I enjoy keeping up with my sports teams, walks with my wife and dog in the vast open spaces of South Dakota, and plastic scale modeling. My favorite reads include biographies and anything on American history. I will do my best to accommodate any scheduling needs you have for any of my classes. Smiling faces are welcome anytime!
Through my teaching experience for over 20 years, I have found the method of facilitating rather than dictating as a highly beneficial type of teaching. I am married with 3 children, and one of my exciting hobbies is military-scale model building.
I am an educator by heart and by profession.
Please message me if you do not see a date and time that works for you. I am able to accommodate most requests.
