Homework
1-2 hours per week. As needed, students may be assigned exercises and prompts to prepare for the following week. If the student is working on current school assignments, they will need to advance on those assignments prior to the next session if they want feedback.

Class Experience

US Grade 9 - 12
Most of us are not born writers. Sure, early on we learn words and how to make sentences. But, somewhere along the way, skills stagnate or fail to fully develop. People confuse being able to fill a page with having ideas and communicating them succinctly.

Have no fear. Writing skill can be taught and can be learned, just like learning to cook, do math, juggle or any other worthwhile pursuit. In each private tutoring session I will work with your student to break down the fears and personal blocks and find the writer within. Expect to leave each meeting with new approaches and a fresh way to think about writing for school or just for yourself.

I expect to spend the first hour or two assessing where your student stands and what deficits need attention. From there, we will build upon exercises and prompts to develop ideas that will work as five-paragraph essays and, eventually, longer form research assignments.

I am happy to work on current writing assignments as well, helping to develop strategies for starting, building, and ultimately editing and finalizing work on a deadline. Your student should come away with newfound confidence and the ability to self-start on future writing work on their own.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
While I will provide a list of common research idea prompts, students are free to select their own research interest for this class. Parents may wish to counsel their students in advance before they choose highly personal topics or attempt to write about political or religious beliefs. Other students may share research interests with the class that are personal or controversial in nature. While I will try to keep students steered toward non-controversial topics, everyone's idea of what is controversial and what is not will differ.
Supply List
All work will be done via Google Docs, so students will need a free Google account. We will rely mostly on free information sources found on the public Internet.

I hold both bachelor and master's degrees in English and have taught college-level writing courses on and off over the years. The major focus of my career since grad school has been as a professional reporter, writer and editor. My writing has been published in major media in print and online. In recent years I have mainly worked as a contract copywriter for corporate clients.
