In this short-term, 1-on-1 tutoring program, students will write a 5-paragraph essay and receive feedback from a licensed ELA teacher.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
  • Students will plan, draft, edit, revise, and submit a final draft of a 5-paragraph essay. After submitting the essay, students will receive feedback based on a rubric and self-editing checklist provided by the teacher.
  • Produce clear and coherent writing in which the development and organization are appropriate to task, purpose, and audience. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.4)
  • With guidance and support from peers and adults, develop and strengthen writing as needed by planning, revising, editing, rewriting, or trying a new approach. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.5.5)
  • Write arguments to support claims with clear reasons and relevant evidence. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.1)
  • Support claim(s) with clear reasons and relevant evidence, using credible sources and demonstrating an understanding of the topic or text. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.1.B)
  • Use words, phrases, and clauses to clarify the relationships among claim(s) and reasons. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.1.C)
  • Establish and maintain a formal style. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.1.D)
  • Provide a concluding statement or section that follows from the argument presented. (CCSS.ELA-LITERACY.W.6.1.E)
I'm a certified English Language Arts teacher. I have been teaching English since 2012. My education includes a Bachelor's degree in English and a Master's degree in teacher. I currently teach high school English.
2 - 4 hours per week outside of class
Assignments
Frequency: 3-6 throughout the class
Feedback: as needed
Details: Writing assignments will be assigned after each lesson for students to practice the writing skill. Students can submit their writing assignment to the teacher through a private Outschool message or share their work with the entire class on the Outschool classroom page.
Assessment
Frequency: 1 after class completion
Details: After all 5 lessons, students will have the opportunity to plan, draft, revise, and edit a 5-paragraph essay on a topic of their choice. They may submit this to the teacher for feedback. An essay writing organizer, revising/editing checklist, and rubric will be provided for students. The teacher will use the rubric and checklist as the basis for providing feedback.
Students will need to spend 2-4 hours outside of class to complete writing assignments. Some students will be able to finish easily within 1-2 hours, but others may need more time. If your student needs extra support, please reach out to me.
