1:1 Essay Writing Tutor: How to Write a 5 Paragraph Essay

In this short-term, 1-on-1 tutoring program, students will write a 5-paragraph essay and receive feedback from a licensed ELA teacher.

Assignments
2-4 hours per week. Writing assignments will be assigned after each lesson for students to practice the writing skill. Students can submit their writing assignment to the teacher through a private Outschool message or share their work with the entire class on the Outschool classroom page.
Assessment
After all 5 lessons, students will have the opportunity to plan, draft, revise, and edit a 5-paragraph essay on a topic of their choice. They may submit this to the teacher for feedback. An essay writing organizer, revising/editing checklist, and rubric will be provided for students. The teacher will use the rubric and checklist as the basis for providing feedback.

Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 6
In this 1:1 short-term essay writing class, students will write a 5-paragraph essay and receive feedback from a licensed English Language Arts Teacher.

Day 1
Plan and Write a Paragraph
We will talk about the basic structure of paragraphs. Students will plan and write their own paragraphs. They will be provided with a writing prompt, rubric, self-edit check list, and receive feedback about their paragraph from the teacher. 


Day 2
Body Paragraphs 
Students will learn how to plan and write body paragraphs that would be included in a 5-paragraph essay. Students will be provided with a writing prompt, rubric, self-edit check list, and receive feedback about their body paragraphs from the teacher. 


Day 3 
Introduction Paragraphs 
Students will learn about how to write an interesting introduction paragraph that makes people want to keep reading. We will learn how to write a hook and a thesis statement. Students will plan and write an introduction paragraph.  Students will be provided with a writing prompt, rubric, self-edit check list, and receive feedback about their introduction paragraph from the teacher. 


Day  4 
Conclusion Paragraphs
Students will plan and write a conclusion paragraph.   Students will be provided with a writing prompt, rubric, self-edit check list, and receive feedback about their conclusion paragraph from the teacher. 


Day 5
How to Edit & Revise
Students will learn how to edit and revise their 5-paragraph essays. They will receive additional feedback about any changes they made to the draft of their 5 paragraph essay. 



Optional Homework: 

Students will complete a draft, revise, and edit a 5 paragraph essay. Students can write as we go or they can wait until the class is done before writing a draft. Learners are encouraged to do what works best for them.

After the last meeting, students will submit the final draft of their 5-paragrpah essay for feedback from a licensed ELA teacher. Please allow one week to receive feedback, in order to allow enough time for the teacher to give detailed, thoughtful feedback to help students improve their essay writing skills.
Learning Goals
Students will plan, draft, edit, revise, and submit a final draft of a 5-paragraph essay. After submitting the essay, students will receive feedback based on a rubric and self-editing checklist provided by the teacher.

Other Details

Parental Guidance
Students will need to spend 2-4 hours outside of class to complete writing assignments. Some students will be able to finish easily within 1-2 hours, but others may need more time. If your student needs extra support, please reach out to me.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
