Class Experience

US Grade 4 - 8
Beginner - Advanced Level
The main goal of this course is for students to gain confidence in their reading skills: sound and word identification, reading tone and inflection, and pausing. Key word identification, underlining main idea and squiggle line supporting ideas. Students will improve memorization skills and will apply the strategies listed above to write a one-two sentence summary for each small paragraph or set of bullet points. Students build reading speed and fluency through daily practice and hearing English speaking models in the form of a native English speaking teacher and other students.

Teacher suggestion: This is a course that is meant to have 20 meetings. All 20 meetings are suggested for student to achieve optimum success. Topics can continue per parent communication.

Class structure is as follows: Welcome/ Warm Up/ Teacher Model (reading), Guided Practice (alternating turns while reading), Independent Practice (teacher model & student summary)/ Share Out

Teacher will use many methods for engaging reluctant readers. (I'll read a sentence, then they read a sentence).

Teacher will gauge readers progress and provides immediate verbal feedback to students in a way that builds student confidence.

Parental Guidance
Sometimes nature can include strange things, such as an animal nibbling on another animal. This is the case in predator or prey situations in the animal kingdom. Please let me know if you student is sensitive to nature items. I will do my best to avoid this items or select another reading for that day. Please keep in mind that the Course title includes Nature, so all reading excerpts will involve nature topics, including at times an animal walking while it is nibbling on another animal.
Supply List
Students need to bring a pencil or pen and a piece of paper to each class.
Students and parents may choose for their student to write in a composition notebook from the dollar store.
I highly suggest finding the scented erasers from the dollar store as well. The grape and blueberry smell lovely.
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.

Bachelor's Degree in English from Grand Valley State University
I have taught English Reading, Comprehension, Literature, and Composition for 17 years. I always look for humor in situations and do my best to keep a light-hearted happy mood in the classroom. I have taught ESL English at the Basic and Intermediate Levels of English using as many different teaching strategies as I can to boost student learning. I strive to boost student confidence in themselves and to push students academically to whatever is the next stage for their learning. My two boys have severe ADHD and mood disorders. (I have heard the ADHD here in the states is referred to executive function in other countries.) I enjoy teaching students of all backgrounds across the globe.
