Assessment
Assessments will be used in a diagnostic capacity to identify student strengths/ weaknesses and inform instruction. Assessments will be done in class and include Heggerty Phonemic Awareness and the Quick Phonics Screener. They are utilized on an as-needed basis and are not required for all students.Class Experience
US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 3
Tutoring sessions will focus on early literacy skills within the Word Recognition category of Scarborough's Reading Rope. The target audience for these tutoring sessions are students who will benefit from remediation, reinforcement, review, or preview of reading skills pertaining to word recognition, including phonological awareness, decoding, and sight recognition. Students will develop these early literacy skills through explicit instruction on syllables, phonemes, letter-sound correspondences, and the recognition of familiar words. Although there are many topics or themes under the umbrella of word recognition, not all learners will require instruction on each skill. The needs of each learner will be assessed through observation, pre-existing diagnostic or screening data, and/or current assessments. Instructional practices include those presented by Orton-Gillingham, LETRS, Heggerty, and Core Knowledge Language Arts. These programs utilize physical items such as letter/ word cards, as well as digital items like slides and decodable readers. Depending on the focus of instruction, students can expect to read words in isolation, encode (write), and apply their reading skills using a variety of texts through an "I do, We do, You do" approach.
Learning Goals
Students will be able to recognize, identify, and manipulate phonemes in words.
Students will be able to decode words with increased complexity as they build their knowledge of sound-spellings or graphemes.
