Class Experience

US Grade Preschool - 12
Whether your child loves to write or resents it, they will have a blast with this class! I will share my screen to present a word document. Each week, a surprise writing prompt will be provided. We will contribute to writing a new short story each week! That’s right! We will write a story, together, in real time! As we will be writing a new story each week with a surprise prompt, this class is perfect to drop in whenever you'd like! Therefore this class is learner-directed.

To those interested in ESL, this is a great class to practice your English skills (as well as watch them grow) stress free. I used to be an ESL teacher for many years and am very familiar with assisting children with the language. Although I do not directly teach ESL in this course, I am always willing, ready, and prepared to explain meanings to words as well as use visual aids to help comprehension. It was a job I truly loved.

This class is a one on one spinoff of my "Writer's Unite! Collaborative Creative Writing" group class. As it will only include one student, this gives more creative opportunities. While I'm more than happy to take turns in writing the story with the student, they are more than welcome to write the entire story themselves with me solely transcribing for them. At the start of each class, I can offer the option of continuing the story from our previous week, using the new story prompt, or starting from scratch.

I want every student to feel heard, appreciated, supported, and congratulated in the making of our story. My goal is for my young aspiring writers to leave class with a sense of accomplishment, confidence, acceptance, and the created story as their trophy held high in their hand (should they choose to print it of course!). This will build confidence and deliver well-earned pride for their efforts, comradeship, and inclusion.

My other goals include helping fellow writers with writer’s block, as well as help those more reluctant to write find the fun in it! While each class does kick off with a surprise writing prompt, what follows next is meant to be sporadic, funny, thrilling, and leaving the readers (and writers!) to wonder what’s next! This atmosphere will be perfect for making the student walk away inspired to write their own story as well as think more openly with their future writing assignments.

As an introvert writer myself, I can’t express how much I initially did NOT look forward to this assignment in college… Once I started it however, it was hands down one of the most lively, fun, and innovative writing assignments that broke me free of my current writer’s block and left me with a thirst to write more! It’s also an all-around brilliant method that encourages a child to be themselves as well as feel accepted and included for their individuality. As their personal transcriptionist, their creativity will NOT be restricted by grammar or spelling weaknesses. I will rapidly assist as needed to ensure their idea is included in the story so that they can shine at their brightest potential!

I like to reserve the last few minutes of class as a Show-and-Tell if the student is interested. I feel this is an offer MANY of my students always enjoy and I love to encourage their personal interests. I believe this makes them more comfortable to be themselves and express their true creativity.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Aside from a bachelor’s in psychology, I also hold a TEFL certificate. I have a lot of experience working with children around the world as I used to teach ESL online for many years. I'm also a homeschooling parent of three (one of which has special needs), so I'm very patient and understanding to the individual needs of each student.
