Class Experience

This conversational class will be conducted in Spanish. The teacher and learner will use clarifying phrases in Spanish in order to ensure optimal use of the target language: how do you say, what is, repeat, more slowly, I don't understand, etc. The learner will determine the topic(s) and/or the grammar they want to practice during the session. If no specific topic is desired, the teacher will offer topics for the learner to choose from: family, school activities, childhood activities, likes/dislikes, travel, daily routines, hypothetical situations, comparing two places, etc. The learner will receive a list of topics before the session begins so they are ready to choose a topic at the beginning of the session. The teacher will take notes on the whiteboard in Spanish and English so the learner will have a visual reference throughout the conversation. These notes will be sent to the parent after the session. The teacher will also adapt the conversation to the needs of the learner. This will be determined throughout the session with informal assessments including yes/no questions, clarifying questions, or a physical response: head nod/shoulder shrug, thumbs up/ thumbs down. The learner will also be able to practice listening and speaking skills as much as they prefer. If they need to practice one more than the other, the teacher will ensure that skill is practiced more. There will be interaction between the learner and teacher during the entire session. Learners can be at any skill level. This can be their first time conversing in Spanish or a high school student who has been studying for years. Learners should be able to read in English in order to understand the visual prompts.
Learning Goals
What the student learns will be determined by the student's listening and speaking abilities in Spanish and what their focus is for the session. If the student is at a novice level, they may only become familiar with the conversational phrases (repeat, how do you say, what is, etc). If the student wants to focus on listening, they will be able to understand certain high-frequency verbs and sentences that contain those verbs more proficiently. If there is a certain topic they want to focus on, they will be able to understand a set of words associated with that topic. If they want to focus more on their speaking ability, they will be able to use a set of words using the framework of a few sentences. For example, they will be able to use vocabulary about their home within the phrases "There are (1, 2, 3, 4) (chairs, beds, windows, mirrors, tables, doors) in the (kitchen, dining room, bedroom, bathroom)," and "The (window, shelf, bed, door, sofa) is (beside, next to, under, in front of) the (window, shelf, bed, door, sofa)."
