Class Experience

US Grade 10 - 12
Welcome to my listing for private help sessions for college application writing. In these personalized tutoring sessions, your learner will receive support in key areas such as crafting compelling college essays, refining application materials, and master writing strategies that will help their essays and writing samples stand out in a competitive admissions landscape. As a professional academic editor and former college admissions officer, I strive to help each student navigate every step of preparing their writing for college applications, ensuring they present their best selves to admissions committees.

To help guide our efforts and ensure we make the most of our time together, I’ve outlined a few key goals that we’ll focus on. These goals are designed to help your learner refine their writing skills, navigate the application process with confidence, and present their best self to potential colleges. Here’s what we can work on together:

1. Develop a Strong Personal Statement: We’ll work on crafting a personal statement or essay that truly reflects who you are and highlights your unique experiences and aspirations.

2. Craft Targeted Supplemental Essays: You’ll learn how to tailor your responses for various supplemental essay prompts, making sure each one aligns perfectly with what different colleges are looking for.

3. Master Application Prompts: We’ll dive into different types of application prompts and practice addressing them effectively, whether they’re about overcoming challenges or exploring your academic interests.

4. Understand Application Components: I’ll help you get familiar with all parts of the college application, from essays and resumes to recommendation letters.

5. Meet Deadlines: We’ll create a timeline to keep you on track, ensuring all your application materials are ready and submitted on time.

6. Proofread and Edit: We’ll go through the process of reviewing and revising your work to make sure it’s polished and impactful.

7. Identify Personal Strengths and Achievements: Together, we’ll reflect on your personal experiences and accomplishments to make sure your application stands out.

8. Express Authentic Voice: You’ll develop a writing style that reflects your true self, rather than trying to fit a mold.

9. Research College Requirements: We’ll make sure you understand the specific requirements for each college you’re applying to, so your submissions are spot on.

10. Seek and Incorporate Feedback: You’ll learn how to seek constructive feedback and use it to enhance your essays and overall application.

11. Manage Stress: We’ll explore techniques to help you manage stress and stay motivated throughout the application process.

12. Build Confidence: Most importantly, I want you to gain confidence in your writing and in the entire application process.

I’m here to guide you through each of these goals and help you create a college application that truly represents your best self. Let’s get started and make this process as productive and enjoyable as possible!

Access to Google Docs for easy editing is recommended but not required. To share a Google Doc, click the "Share" button, usually in the top right corner. Under "General access," select the options "Anyone with the link" and "Editor." This will allow me to quickly access your learner's document and be able to make notes directly onto their work. Then, simply copy and paste the Google Docs link into the Classroom or in a Message to me through Outschool. I will also accept Word docx files, which I will convert into a Google Doc before our meeting. I can work with your learner using PDF files, though my ability to make editorial notes directly are limited.

Profile
Teacher expertise and credentials
I am a professional academic and creative writing editor who has worked on college admissions boards, on the approvals board for various academic journals, and as an editor for databases and journals related to such diverse fields as Classics, musicology and music theory, sociology, and the sciences. I have worked on college admissions boards vetting application essays, edited papers for graduate and post-graduate researchers, and have taught Bibliography and humanities research courses. I am a thorough (picky) editor with an eye for correct grammar, tonal and colloquial accuracy (using the correct tone based on the writing task), stylistic consistency, and factual accuracy. My primary goal is to teach students how to effectively edit their own work, rather than simply telling them what to change.
