US Grade Kindergarten - 4
Please contact me to find out the current availability of tutoring slots. Please don't hesitate to reach out if you have any questions at all! This is the 30-minute, 1 time per week class that is also offered in 45-minute length. This class is PERFECT for a child that is on the younger side or has focusing/attention issues for whom a longer class is not appropriate. I am an experienced and certified Special Education Teacher, Orton-Gillingham Tutor, Director of Special Education at my school, and a certified Literacy Specialist. I look forward to working with your child to help them make significant progress with any reading or writing challenges. I am trained in the Orton-Gillingham methodology, which is the recommended method for teaching students with Dyslexia to read and write. I also have experience using the Wilson program as well as putting together my own, more specialized, and individualized programming for students struggling with decoding. Motivation is often a point of conflict with students with decoding and comprehension issues, making reading seem very challenging and unrewarding. I pride myself on learning about what makes each student 'tick' and honing my work with them in those areas. Additionally, I make it possible for students to see their progress, which creates motivation and the desire to keep working. Note: Please be aware that unless you have a current assessment of your child's decoding and writing (whichever area(s) are required) the first session you book MUST be my assessment session (which is 45 minutes) - please contact me to set this up. Without specific data as to what a student is struggling with, I would be poking around in the dark and wasting your money. Any tutor you work with should always request the same, otherwise, they are just guessing at what your child needs. If you have any questions about this, please message me - I am happy to explain what assessment strategies I employ and how I make the best use of them later on. Specifics of what sessions will look like for your child depend on their individual needs. Here is a general idea of the types of activities and the order in which they would typically happen (Note: not all the activities would be completed in each session). - Fast phonics review (of letter sounds or letter combination sounds appropriate to your child's level) - Review of previously learned content (for example reading CVC words or practicing breaking up multisyllabic words into syllables) - Introduction to a new phonics rule (for example ch says /ch/ or a closed syllable has one vowel sound and a consonant at the end, making the vowel say its short sound) - Practice the newly introduced concept through various applications building from easiest to more challenging so your child always feels successful - Reading of connected text by reading sentences and longer passages made of controlled text (containing only words they have learned how to decode in addition to the sight words they have also learned) Additional components could include games, learning and practicing spelling patterns, and comprehension activities. -
Learning Goals
Goals will be individualized based on your child's needs. I will provide you with the goals we will be working on as well as the ongoing assessment so that you can see/monitor your child's progress.
