Elements of Poetry and Poetry Analysis through the lens of Black American poets like: Paul Lawrence Dunbar, and Langston Hughes, contemporary artists such as Nas, Jay Z, Tupac, Kendrick Lamar, Queen Latifah, Lauryn Hill, and a Tribe Called Quest
Elements of Drama through playwrights August Wilson and Lorraine Hansberry
Learning Goals
Students will be able to analyze the human experience through poetry of prolific Black American entertainers
Students will be able to give insight and commentary on their own lives through the use of poetry and writing

Unit 1: Poetry/Drama
Lesson 1:
Figurative Language
 Students will learn how to identify and interpret different types of figurative language: simile, hyperbole, alliteration, allusion, metaphor, personification, oxymoron, and onomatopoeia

Tone & Mood
 Students will be able to analyze the author’s tone and make inference about the reader’s mood

Harlem- Langston Hughes
 Students will analyze the poem, “ Harlem” by Langston Hughes by looking at the historical and cultural context of The Great Migration of the pre civil rights era.

We Wear The Mask- Paul Lawrence Dunbar
 Students will analyze the poem, “We Wear the Mask” by Paul Lawrence Dunbar by reading about Reconstruction Era and making contextual connections
