What's included

12 live meetings
8 in-class hours
Assignments
1-2 hours per week. A student login for Hearbuilder will be provided to parents if it would be beneficial. If Hearbuilder is assigned, students should login and work in the app for at least 10 minutes a day. I encourage parents to log in to Hearbuilder with their children daily to help them work on phonemic and phonetic awareness, sequencing, auditory memory, and direction following outside of class time. Online games on Wordwall and additional at-home activities will be provided after each meeting. These activities are designed to fit the scope and sequence of the curriculum and are customized for your learner's specific educational needs. Learners and parents need to be prepared to work on assigned activities daily to get the most benefit from tutoring. Participation on assignments is required for this course.

Class Experience

US Grade 1 - 4
Need more personalized instruction for your beginning reader? Do you feel your student needs a better foundation in phonics before the next school year?

During the first session, your student will be screened for letter recognition, phonemic awareness, and placement for the Barton Reading and Spelling System or UFLI, which are both Structured Literacy programs. Class size will be limited to 1 to provide personalized instruction and pacing. We all learn best when we are interested and engaged, so we will add in multi-sensory activities, shared reading, rhyming, and phonics games.

As a mom to a teen with Dyslexia and a homeschool parent, I know how hard it is to find a perfect fit for our struggling readers that will build their confidence and encourage personal growth. If your student is still learning to recognize letters or has specific needs or interests, let me know!

After the screening assessment, students will begin in Barton Level 1, 2, or 3 or in UFLI.

Level 1 teaches all seven essential Phonemic Awareness skills: segmenting, blending, comparing, adding, deleting, substituting, and rhyming. Mastery will be demonstrated by completing the Level 1 posttest with 95% accuracy or higher.

Level 2 includes learning phonics with VC/ CVC words and digraphs.

Level 3 begins with initial and final consonant blends with short vowel sounds, then progresses to spelling rules for closed syllables. I am only offering Barton Levels 1-3 in remote sessions at this time. Students usually move to UFLI in the middle or after Barton Book 3, although UFLI may be used to supplement lessons as needed.

Learners should have all or most consonant letter sounds mastered before signing up for this class. If your learner is still learning some letter sounds, let me know!
Learners need to be able to use a mouse and drag and drop items on a virtual whiteboard.
The learner's camera and microphone are required to be on for the entire session so that we can make the best use of our time!

A small white board and dry erase marker or plain white paper and a marker/pen are required for this class.

A headset with microphone or a separate microphone with earbuds/earphones are extremely helpful with this class. I encourage parents to provide learners with a headset with microphone.

Please have your learner seated at a desk or table with all supplies before class.
I encourage parents to provide 10 minutes of transition time before class, as many struggling learners benefit from transition time!

Please Note: Participation in homework assignments sent to the parent after each class is required for this course.

Selected and reviewed read aloud picture books will be on Kindle Reader, or students will have the option of creating a comic page using Pixton. I will be providing a Hearbuilder login to parents for students who need extra work on phonemic awareness, auditory/visual memory, and direction following on their own time. When Hearbuilder is assigned, students should practice in the app at least 10 minutes a day. I encourage parents to login to this app with their learner on a daily basis.
