Class Experience

Beginner - Advanced Level
Does your learner find it hard to continue a conversation? Have a Public Speaking competition to prepare for? An important interview? Or are they learning English (ESL/EFL/EAL) but lack the confidence to actually apply their learning in a real setting?

In this class, each week Mrs. T will set your learner a topic or thought-provoking question that they need to prepare some ideas on independently. After a focused vocal/mouth exercise and tongue twister to warm up, the learner will then deliver their ideas (either in the form of a prepared speech if they are preparing for a Public Speaking competition etc, or by responding to questions, if this is to prepare for an interview or to develop public speaking/conversation skills). Mrs. T will gently correct any mispronunciations, and problems with grammar, tenses, sense, and clarity. As an experienced speech and drama tutor she can also suggest ways to improve the communication and presentation of their ideas, with suggestions of tone, changes in pitch, use of pauses, emphasis, pace etc. She extend the depth of the conversation/speech/ideas with further questioning and teach learners how to do this themselves.

An example of weekly topics/questions is:
Week 1- I wish I was more.....
Week 2- If I was in charge of this planet I would.....
Week 3- I held a position of responsibility when I........
Week 4- The strangest thing I ever saw was...
Week 5: If I could invent something it would be......
Week 6: A challenge I overcame was.......

As this is a 1:1 class these topics/questions can be tailored to your learner's needs, and we can work to address any problem areas (like thinking of responses on the spot, getting rid of 'ums' and 'ers', extending one word or short answers, expanding vocabulary choices, sounding more confident or convincing, or fluency in speaking etc).

Please note this is not an English language learning class. This class is for native speakers or ESL/EFL/EAL speakers who already have a good grasp of English, but need practice/ or get nervous to actually speak it, need support developing their speaking in real-life terms, or need to prepare for potential interviews with a native, clearly spoken, very patient, friendly speaker.
Learning Goals
Learners will develop their public speaking and/or their confidence in it by preparing ideas (or a speech) on a weekly topic or question and then being coached on the best way to deliver those ideas.
