Beginner - Advanced Level
Putting All The Pieces Together: A Personalized Music Production Curriculum

This is a private instruction class, and your child will have ongoing 1 on 1 support to help them with their growing interest in audio production. No matter where your child is in their journey, I'll hone in on what they want to achieve and build my lessons around their interests and skill level. Below are more details on what we'd focus on as well as some example curriculum.

Software Focus:
Digital audio software similar to Logic Pro X, BandLab, GarageBand (depending on student preference and access).

Hardware Focus:
USB Controllers, Audio Interfaces, Microphones (again, depending on student preference and access)

Student Focus:

Beginners: Exploring creative potential, building a foundational understanding of music production software and basic beat-making techniques.

Intermediate: Refining skills in beat making, learning music theory for composition, and exploring advanced production techniques (e.g., effects, mixing).

Advanced: Developing a unique sound, focusing on professional production workflows, experimentation with advanced tools and techniques.

Curriculum: (Tailored to individual needs, but generally following this structure)
Module 1: Introduction to Music Production: (All Levels)

Exploring the software interface and basic workflow.
Understanding audio concepts (tracks, samples, loops).
Creating simple beats with drum samples and MIDI instruments.
Homework: Create a basic beat using the provided drum samples and save it for future use.

Module 2: Building Your Beats: (Beginner - Intermediate)
Learning about different drum sounds and building foundational beats.
Understanding rhythm, quantization, and basic editing techniques.
Adding melodic elements (synths, virtual instruments) to create complete compositions.
Homework: Experiment with different drum patterns and try adding a simple melody to your beat.

Module 3: Exploring Soundscapes: (Intermediate - Advanced)
Introduction to music theory for composition (chords, scales).
Advanced beat programming with swing, ghost notes, and fills.
Working with audio samples (manipulation, effects processing).
Homework: Create a beat using a specific chord progression and experiment with different effects to shape the sound.

Module 4: Mixing and Mastering: (Intermediate - Advanced)
Understanding mixing fundamentals (EQ, compression, panning).
Utilizing effects processors to create unique soundscapes.
Mastering techniques for final polishing and export.
Homework: Mix and master one of your previous beats, focusing on balancing the elements and achieving a professional sound.

Module 5: Creative Exploration and Artist Development: (All Levels)
Identifying musical influences and developing a unique style.
Experimentation with different genres and techniques.
Building a "producer toolbox" of personal presets and samples.
Homework: Research your favorite artists and analyze their production techniques to inspire your own music.

Class Structure: Highly interactive, hands on learning. Students will spend the majority of the lesson time actively using software and creating music. There will be some interactive demos. Short, engaging demonstrations will be used to introduce new concepts, followed by guided practice and discussions. I'll also include mini lessons, presenting a mix of slides, video tutorials, and visual references.

Individualized Instruction: I will adapt the pace and complexity of the lessons to each student's skill level and interests.

Feedback and Encouragement: Throughout the lesson, I will provide continuous feedback, answer questions, and offer encouragement to keep students motivated.

Teaching Style: My teaching style is enthusiastic, patient, and student-centered. I believe in fostering a creative and supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions and exploring their abilities.

Interaction Level: Hands-on software practice will be the primary mode of interaction. I'll provide context and clarification for software techniques. Students will be encouraged to ask questions and share their progress throughout the lesson. Homework will challenge students to tackle a project on their own.

I’m Paul and I’m excited to be offering classes in digital music here on Outschool! I’ll be facilitating a variety of classes that will challenge your child's creative abilities.

I’ve been teaching digital audio production for over 20 years.
Since I started, I've learned how to use so many tools including apps, software, plug-ins and tricks. I've been around long enough to see music transition from Vinyl to Tape to CD to mp3 to streaming. Although the technology has advanced, the process of creating and producing music is still the same.

I'm currently enrolled at Southern Utah University (online) Grad School, pursuing a Masters in Music Technology with a Film emphasis. My passion for learning and teaching go hand in hand.

Providing students with a platform to grow and cultivate their own passions in music and art has always been at the core of my teaching. For most my career, I've used the project based learning method.

I've conducted workshops in many educational settings such as afterschool programs, summer camps, non-profit centers and recording studios. I've worked in schools, churches, youth centers, and alternative education spaces. I’ve also done my fair share of freelance audio production projects, and have even put out a few independent releases over the years.

I’m a home school parent which also shapes my pedagogy. Home schooling gives children and parents bit more freedom and control over their learning and career path. (My 2 children attend classes on Outschool. )

My three levels of focus in the classroom have always been:
(1) using the latest state-of-art-technology...which is constantly evolving
(2) training students for technical careers in radio, tv and film
(3) having fun

One of the music programs that I am most proud of is Inner Power Records, where I managed the space and taught students the music production process from start to finish--enabling them to write, record, perform and release their own music. You can listen to some of the music we produced at https://innerpower.bandcamp.com/

I'm an audiophile. I collect records. I enjoy artists like John Coltrane, Kokoroko, J Dilla, Bob Marley, Stevie Wonder, Robert Glasper, A Tribe Called Quest. Anything with a good beat, I'm all about listening to. I enjoy films too, one of my favs is Ghost Dog, ft. Forest Whittaker, soundtrack scored by The RZA of The WuTang Clan.

I look forward to helping you learn whatever it is to get you to that next level.
