How is the instruction of the class structured?

*The first class scheduled with be to assess the learners current level of reading performance by completing a variety of quick assessments.

Ongoing classes:

1.We will begin the instruction of class with a review of letter names and letter sounds by singing a song and/or the use of flashcards displayed on paper or on a powerpoint slide.

2. We will work on phonological awareness by listening to and breaking up the sounds of words we hear.

2. Students will then learn how to segment sounds and blend them together focusing on our sound of the day with word study words.

3. Students will write a dictated sentence on paper or a whiteboard with the help of the instructor using the short vowel sound. They will try to write the sentence on their own first. Then, the instructor will guide as needed. Discussion of basic sentence structure will take place.

4. Students will be given 2-3 sight words and/or vocabulary for the new short story of the day. Then, they will practice writing the words on a whiteboard, in sand or in rice as practice.

5. Finally, students will listen to and read a short story or short passage going over the sound of the day to reinforce skills and build fluency!
