Class Experience

US Grade 5 - 7
Parents, does your child need extra help with their reading and writing assignments? Consider this class to be your afterschool headquarters for supplemental English instruction. Before our scheduled tutoring sessions begin, let us have a conversation about your child's performance in their English Language Arts classes. Think about the following questions:
What is the student doing well in their ELAR classes, and what skills need improvement?
I will use parent-provided information to informally assess the student's learning level and prepare appropriate lesson materials.

The class structure is as follows:
1. Each session starts with a brief journal-writing assignment. (5 minutes)

 2. If the student has homework, I will first reteach concepts taught in their core class(es). After working through a few example questions, the student will complete their school assignment(s) with guidance.
If the student does not have homework, I will focus on building summaries, composing extended constructed responses, reviewing theme, main idea, plot, and inferencing. The student will then complete both teacher-guided and independent practice questions following the lesson. (20 minutes)

3. Tutoring sessions will end with a student-centered review activity to check for understanding. (5 minutes)

My goal is to help students develop their reading, writing, and grammar skills through both explicit and student-centered instruction.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Welcome!
My classes focus on promoting literacy and online literacy through book clubs, blogging, and online grammar games.

Before becoming a 6th Grade English teacher, I worked as an instructional aide in a film production class for two and a half years and as a substitute teacher for one year. Due to health concerns brought about by the pandemic, I left my teaching position. Still, I love to learn, and I believe that is the key to overcoming any academic obstacle--a willingness to learn and adapt. I am no stranger to remote learning/teaching. Since 2018, I have worked as an independent contractor with VIPKid--teaching English to children in China. This experience has taught me to modify various educational strategies to fit learner needs in physical and virtual classrooms. It has also allowed me to move fluidly from one teaching platform to another. I am very excited to meet my Outschool students, and I look forward to forming a cohesive team of online learners who, even from a distance, are dedicated to building each other up. Let’s do this!

Fun fact about me:
I love comedy, creating and editing short videos, and coffee shop hopping. What is something that is interesting/special about you? Share your responses with me in class.
