Class Experience
Before signing up for 1-on-1 Comprehensive Art Tutoring, please consider sending me a brief message about your learner and their goals. This will help me prepare for our lesson and get to know your young artist. A majority of art classes are taught in small, focused groups that allow students to collaborate on projects, discuss ideas and techniques, and learn to analyze and critique their peers' artwork. While this format of art classes is largely successful at teaching a broad range of skills and techniques, there may be little opportunity for individual attention. 1-on-1 Comprehensive Art Tutoring course allows students to seek specific or specialized advice, critique, learn about art theory or history in-depth, explore their personal styles, and more through picking their own artistic journey. One-on-one tutoring sessions will seek to answer all of the artists' questions in a variety of ways, depending on the question and student. I employ live demonstrations of techniques, short and fun PowerPoint slideshows, customized worksheets, and informational lectures and discussions to teach. Artists will complete their lessons with a binder full of helpful resources, exercises to practice, confidence, inspiration, and motivation! Each lesson will be unique to the specific student and their needs. Your artist may be interested in a private tutoring session if they: -Have artistic questions that web searches don't answer -Are stuck on an art project(s) -Feel like they are not improving -Are seeking specific advice or critique -Need to build art portfolios -Want extra practice in a specific area -Are looking for thorough lessons about a genre, style, or period of art And for a variety of other reasons! No background knowledge is required. Homework is dependent on the needs and goals of the artist, but practice of concepts will be encouraged outside of class. I utilize positive verbal critiques to provide feedback and encourage improvement. Learners progress will be gauged by the completion of their assignments, execution of techniques, contributions in critique sessions, and their class presence (being on-time and listening when I am speaking.)

Teacher expertise and credentials
I am delighted to be able to offer classes that emphasize fine art techniques through the lens of observational drawing. Observational art is a method of learning to draw with three principles in mind: understanding of the subject, building looking skills, and practice of artistic technique. Through this method and practice, learners can draw anything. Completion of my courses will result in a learner who is engaged with art and understands basic art technique. Even students who are not aspiring artists have much to gain from drawing, including improvement of hand-eye coordination and hand dexterity skills.
Along with my bachelor’s degree in art history and studio art from a premier liberal arts institution in Ohio, I also have been teaching since 2016. My online teaching career began on Outschool in 2017. I have taught homeschoolers, unschoolers, and undergraduate students of all ages. My background in art history means that my classes are created with an understanding of historical precedence- I’m teaching what I know works! Many of my classes include examples of important artworks from masters for students to examine and learn skills from. In addition, my many years of teaching art have helped me curate concise and logical drawing curriculum that young artists can easily pick up and apply to their work. Every art class I teach hopes to provide learners with all the knowledge and support they need to grow as an artist.
