Class Experience

US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - Kindergarten
This ongoing class will help students who are new to reading and those who would like a review to gain long term mastery of the Pre-Primer Leveled Dolch Words! We will study a new set of words, but also review previously practiced words for continued mastery. =)

We will practice fun tips and tricks to help us remember each word, use different mediums (crayons, colored pencils, markers) to practice writing each new word, and read multiple sentences using our new words. It is imperative to use a variety of methods to teach sight words. Students must see the word form, must write the word, and they MUST be able to read their new words in context.

Many students may be able to recite a word off a flash card after they have reviewed it a few times, but it is very different when the student is asked to read this same word when in a story or in a sentence written. Students often have a difficult time remembering these words when asked to read them in a sentence or story. In my own classroom, I have seen this with countless students, which is why I always have my students practice reading sight words in sentences. This is the key to not only being able to recognize a word in text, but to be able to read it fluently as well!

My goal is for all of my students to successfully read all sight words in any text with confidence and precision. =) In each class, we will study five different pre-primer words. NO prior classes are needed. =) The words "I" and "a" will be used in addition to each set of words.

Our word schedule:

Set 1: can, see, help, me, you

Set 2: we, play, go, run, and

Set 3: up, to, down, said, jump

Set 4: come, look, it, is, not

Set 5: yellow, red, blue, find, make

Set 6: little, my, the, big, for

Set 7: have*, one, said, two, three

Set 8: it, is, here, in, where

Set 9: away, is, funny, here, the

*have is not a pre-primer word

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hi! My name is Nicole Marder. =) I grew up with a passion for teaching. My mom was a Kindergarten teacher for thirty three years and I followed in her footsteps and became a Kindergarten teacher as well! I subbed for grades K-12 for three years while in college and taught for four years before I had my son. I took an extended maternity leave, but I have continued my educational journey and tutored students from Kindergarten through Sixth Grade.

While subbing, teaching in a public school, and tutoring; I found whole body movement, singing, using silly phrases, and drawing were essential to each student's success. There is no identical learner and it is so important to meet each student's learning needs to optimize learning!!

I love having fun and being silly while teaching! Students need to have a class setting where it is fun and where they don't have to worry about getting an answer wrong! I tell my son on a daily basis that mistakes are vital to learning!

It would be a privilege to teach your child and I look forward to meeting your child in my class soon! =)
