1-1 Early Learning for Struggling Readers and/or Dyslexic Students [RR3]
What's included
3 live meetings
45 mins in-class hours per weekHomework
I ask that students practice reading between sessions. Passages will be provided by way of PDF so your child can read the e-copy or print a hard copy.Assessment
I will start tutoring by giving an informal assessment or screening to determine where I need to start instruction. Do they know the letters and sounds? High-frequency words? Simple decodable text? More complex text? I just need to know where they are.Class Experience
US Grade Pre-Kindergarten - 3
I'm Ms. Brenda, a highly qualified Reading Interventionist. I am a Certified Dyslexia Tutor and have taught Reading Interventions for 27 years. I will do a brief discovery screening with your child to obtain the needed information for well-informed instruction. Depending on age and grade, this may include alphabet recognition, sound recognition, decoding skills, phonological awareness, high-frequency word recognition, and penmanship. I am trained in Barton Reading and Spelling plus multi-sensory instruction. I will systematically move your child along a continuum of phonics instruction to gain the skills needed for success. Your child's session will include a study of the alphabetic code and how it is applied in phonemic awareness. We will look at phonological awareness through rhyming, segmenting words, manipulating letters, and sentence construction. Part of the learning to read process includes writing so therefore we will have writing that will accompany some sessions. During our times together we will work on letter/sound relationships, reading, spelling, and writing. The sessions will be interactive with letter-tiles and word-tiles and will contain videos, games, slides, high-frequency word instruction, decodable reading, and more. Is your child struggling to print (manuscript)? I have success teaching even 4 year olds how to write in cursive. All letters start in the same place, it's difficult to confuse b, d, p, and q when writing cursive. It flows like painting! I believe in meeting the student where they are and following the student as I guide them to success. If you don't see a time listed that is convenient for your schedule please contact me for other available times.
Learning Goals
The student will gain phonological knowledge, phonemic awareness, and confidence needed to read and write successfully.

In my introductory video you met my fur baby. Since March 2020 I've spent a lot of time tutoring virtually, reading, knitting and crocheting with him napping on my lap.
