Class Experience

This highly interactive, ongoing and personally tailored class will have learners beaming with pride at their ability to pick out a Picasso, spot a Matisse cutout, and identify Van Gogh's impasto brushstrokes like an art history pro!

Each week, your learner and I will focus on a specific artist. We will spend the first part of class understanding what made the spotlight artist tick, from his artistic beginnings, to his/her physical movement around the world, to the random facts that support a well-rounded early education in the arts (like that Matisse developed his paper cutout style while bedridden later in his life, and Van Gogh painted self-portraits because he couldn't afford models!).

Later, your student will explore the spotlight artist's most iconic style for themselves, creating, for example, an inspired paint-splattering masterpiece like Pollock, a dotted extravaganza like Seurat, or a (student favorite) cubist self-portrait ala Picasso. In private lessons, the projects are always personally tailored to your student's desires and abilities.

My teaching style is warm, encouraging and lively and my goal is to nurture kids' natural love of learning and creating. This class fits any homeschool curriculum, but is equally accessible to anyone who simply loves learning about artists, creating art, or both! This class is perfect for quiet learners and enthusiastic participants, alike.

For this private class, the spotlighted artists can depend on your learners interests. Some possible artists we could cover include Matisse, Seurat, Kandinsky, Van Gogh, Kahlo, O'Keeffe, Mondrian, Monet, and the list goes on!
Learning Goals
This class supports beginning art, history, art history, and art appreciation, among other disciplines. Throughout the course, students will learn to identify the artist behind the work (even younger elementary students will be excited to identify Seurat's pointillism, Matisse's cutouts and Van Gogh's impasto brushstrokes) and remember key facts about their lives that are fun to share and helpful to know. Students will also learn how to implement these famous artists' styles in their artwork inside and outside of class.

Other Details

Supply List
All classes will require art paper (sturdy, multimedia art paper is best but copy paper will also work), a pencil, an eraser, and a black marker/Sharpie. Typically, students will be able to use whatever coloring supplies they prefer, e.g., markers, crayons, colored pencils, oil pastels, chalk pastels, watercolors, etc. If alternative supplies are needed, I will send the learner a message with a heads up!
External Resources
Learners will not need to use any apps or websites beyond the standard Outschool tools.
Sources
Each week, we will view multiple original works by the spotlight artist. Where it is enlightening, we will also read direct quotes by those artists about their lives, philosophy and/or works. Lastly, I may sometimes reference some excellent biographical books, including "Artists: Inspiring Stories of Their Lives and Works" by Susie Hodge.

Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello! I'm Nicole, and I'm thrilled to be your child's guide to the beautiful world of discovering new things. My teaching style is warm, lively, and nurturing, creating a safe and engaging environment where every student can thrive. Over the years, I've been honored to develop deep relationships with my students. Some have gone from hating art to winning art awards and aspiring to become artists. I'm proud that many neurodivergent students who originally disliked learning now eagerly look forward to my classes each week.

I bring a diverse background to my teaching. As a lawyer and current stay-at-home homeschool teacher and co-op educator for other homeschooled students, I have a unique perspective on education. I graduated from college in just 10 months at the age of 19 and became Michigan's Attorney General Office's "Rookie of the Year" attorney at 22. My own fast-paced educational journey fueled my passion for helping students gain confidence in learning, understanding our world, and discovering their own unique abilities and callings within it.

In my classes, I strive to make learning an exciting adventure. I use interactive presentations and creative art projects to bring subjects to life, ensuring that every student feels valued and inspired. I'm passionate about helping students come alive with confidence in their learning journey, and I can't wait to embark on this educational and artistic adventure with your family!
