Description

Class Experience

The goal for this class is to become familiar with the general purpose (connection), main skills (empathetic listening and honest self-expression), and key components (observations, feelings, needs, and requests) of Compassionate Communication. We will have multiple opportunities to also practice reframing our conflicts with the tools of Compassionate Communication.
I spent over ten years developing my philosophy of peace and started my Nonviolent Communication (NVC) studies under certified trainers Jim and Jori Manske, Jeff Brown, Lynd Morris, and David Shindoll. With background studies in philosophy of mind and Buddhism, I have worked to combine compassionate communication with leadership skills and systems thinking so as to better engage others in the world with both compassion and authenticity in a wide range of contexts.

For my own sake, I have utilized NVC in both personal and professional arenas of my life, including teaching and life coaching. As part of my background, I have worked as an active agent for the Rocky Mountain Compassionate Communication Center (RMCCC), a camp guide in the nationwide Family HEART Camp organization, and a lead facilitator for the Littleton NVC Practice Group in Colorado where I and my family currently reside.

For more of my background in working with middle and high schoolers, as well as what I currently do full-time, feel free to check out my Outschool teacher bio page.

Want more? Here are a few comments from my colleagues and past clients regarding my work in this field:

“The authenticity and sincerity Kelsey exudes while facilitating is inspiring. He truly walks the talk and teaches by example.”
 — David S., Life Coach and President of the Rocky Mountain Compassionate Communication Center

“Whether we are working together, facilitating together or simply sharing a cup of tea, I experience comfort and ease around Kelsey. When I am connecting with him, I find it easy to access my heart.”
— Susan J., MS, CCC, MAM, Speech Language Pathologist, Mediator, Entrepreneur, and Certified NVC Trainer

“I have found working with Kelsey on NVC [Nonviolent Communication] to be insightful and inspiring. He points to the essence of NVC, not simply the mechanics of it. Every time I work with him to more deeply understand NVC and integrate it into my life, I have come away with heightened enthusiasm and commitment to living my life in a more conscious, responsible, and connected way.”
— Amanda K., Psychotherapist for the Arapahoe-Douglas Mental Health Network

“I love working with Kelsey because he seems to understand complex aspects of my personality, thought and emotions in a way that I rarely find in people. I’ve witnessed his ability to track deeply with other people and situations on multiple occasions, and I continue to be impressed. And to compliment his rich insight comes a wonderful playfulness and willingness to laugh. My interactions with him have been just a joy all around!”
— Cecelia B., Freelance Writer and NVC Practice Group Facilitator

“Kelsey lives and breathes his authentic commitment to Compassionate Communication. He helps people build bridges intellectually and emotionally toward healthy living. Insightful and engaging, Kelsey’s manner is both lyrical and methodical. He captures the essence of being human through understanding and insightful communication. From strategic planning, to group facilitation skills, experiential classes, or one-on-one sessions, Kelsey is a trustworthy, reliable choice for true understanding.”
— Dindy F., Adult Education and Employment Instructor, and NVC Practice Group Facilitator

"Kelsey's tireless work ethic, kindness, integrity, and accountability stand out as exceptional qualities that make him one of the most reliable and solid people I know. He has an incredible ability to support others connect with their deeper truth while also staying grounded in his own truth."
— Thomas M., Success Mentor for Teens and Former NVC Candidate

“Kelsey has gracefully implemented NVC [Nonviolent Communication] to help me see my life and situations using a completely new frame of mind that often illuminates the crux of whatever issue is bothering me. Though I am fairly new to NVC, Kelsey’s compassionate, non-judgmental approach makes me feel safe and cared for. I would recommend consulting Kelsey if your normal problem-solving skills have left you in a rut—Kelsey will help you light a hidden pathway to peace and understanding.”
— Karen L., Financial Analyst at EducationFirst

I highly recommend purchasing Nonviolent Communication: A Language of Life by Marshall Rosenberg, Ph.D. Rosenberg began developing Nonviolent Communication in the early 1960's as "a process for supporting partnership and resolving conflict within people, in relationships, and in society" (Wikipedia.org). This book covers all the fundamentals on which my compassionate communication classes are based. You can purchase either editions of this book here: + 2nd ed.: https://amzn.to/2It5UaE (This is my favorite) + 3rd ed.: https://amzn.to/2IfzroY (A newer and less expensive edition)
A short mastery check is offered at the end of the lesson in order to check for understanding and also consolidate a couple of the main takeaways from the instruction.
55 minutes per week in class, and no time outside of class.
These classes are offered in the spirit of self-directed, interest-based learning of the student. Compassionate Communication is an effective tool for those who are interested and open to learning about it; it is NOT a tool for "fixing" conflicts between parties. To this end, please enroll your student ONLY if they are interested in it and wanting to learn about this form of communication. I also ask that if a student's sibling also wishes to participate that they do so in a different section (day and time) to avoid any two people related to each other participating in the same class.

With interpersonal communication come opportunities for sharing our past or present emotions with others. At times, these emotions can be difficult to share or process in the presence of our peers. I strive to ensure that our classroom provides a safe environment for this sharing despite being online. As a past group facilitator of NVC, I have experience with both creating and mediating this environment. That said, it is important for students and their parents to understand and agree to the requirement of confidentiality, as well as respect for others, in this environment in order to participate. Please let me know if you have any questions in this regard!
