From Emperors to Revolutions: A Dynamic Journey Through World History

Explore history like never before! In this weekly, learner-directed class, we dive into a new topic every week—from the highest seats of power in ancient times to groundbreaking revolutions that reshaped nations. Whether we're discussing the intricacies of parliamentary shifts, examining the legacies of the Romanovs, or comparing Aristotle’s ideas to those of Thomas Jefferson, each session is an invitation to discover history in a fun and engaging way.

How It Works:

Student-Led Exploration:
Every class concludes with an open discussion where students suggest topics for the next session. I then select a topic that both aligns with my expertise and is appropriate for your age and interests. This means you're not just learning history—you’re helping shape it!

Student-Centered Approach:
Think of me as your guide rather than a lecturer. I ask thought-provoking questions and prompt discussions to spark critical thinking. While research projects and active class participation are encouraged, they’re entirely optional—you decide how involved you want to be.

Sample Weekly Topics:

The U.S. Civil War and Reconstruction:
Delve into the events that led to the Civil War and the challenges of rebuilding a nation afterward, as we explore the deep political, social, and economic changes of the era.

The Russian Revolution:
Discover one of the pivotal moments of the 20th century. Learn about the fall of the Romanovs, the end of imperial rule, and the rise of Communism that transformed Russia and the world.

The Renaissance:
Experience the European “rebirth” after the Middle Ages. We’ll explore how a renewed interest in classical art, literature, and philosophy spurred cultural and social revolutions.

Empires and Kingdoms:
What sets an empire apart from a kingdom? In this session, we’ll investigate powerful dynasties like the Ottoman, Persian, and British empires. Meet legendary figures like Genghis Khan, follow Napoleon’s rise, and examine the sprawling Umayyad dynasty.

Content Sensitivity and Emotional Well-Being Violence, Conflict, and Sensitive Topics: World History often covers wars, conflicts, and other difficult subjects (e.g., slavery, genocide, colonization). Students may encounter descriptions or images of violence or suffering. The class will provide appropriate context and handle these topics with sensitivity, but parents should be aware that some material may be unsettling or emotionally charged. Respectful Discussion and Conduct Diverse Perspectives: World History examines multiple viewpoints and cultural contexts. Students will be encouraged to maintain respectful dialogue, recognizing that peers may have different cultural backgrounds, beliefs, or family histories. Classroom Etiquette: In debates or group activities, students should adhere to guidelines that foster polite, productive conversation, avoiding any form of bullying, harassment, or hateful speech.
