One of the easiest ways to improve writing and to create captivating writing pieces is to include adjectives. In a world where we get so used to hearing the same words, it's time to expand our vocabulary and be able to describe people, feelings, places and things with some 'wow' words! In this ongoing interactive class students will look at an image, imagine an event or think deeply about feelings and then brainstorm adjectives together. Each lesson will start with the students being introduced to what they will be describing in that lesson. It may be a picture of a place, an animal, a person or picture showing a certain feeling. Together we will discuss what is happening, what are the obvious things we see or think. Then we will brainstorm adjectives describing our object/person/place/feeling. Every week a new picture will be sent on the Outschool page, students can use this picture or draw their own in the class. This will be used for labelling the new words, so that they have a visual representation as well that can be used after the class has ended. We will practice saying these words in sentences that make sense. If the students would like to be challenged writing a sentence or two with these new words they can either write their own or use the model that I will give them. The focus in this class is learning a handful of new words and really understanding what they mean and being able to use it in both writing and speaking. Those who would like to share their writing publicly can do so, however, this is the student's choice. I have a relaxed, encouraging, and enthusiastic teaching style and love learner-based lessons. Interaction is key and a safe and supportive environment is essential for happy and productive learning. This class is perfect for an ESL student who is wanting to gain confidence speaking and writing in English as well as younger English-speaking students who may not have a grasp on using different vocabulary easily. For those who are more confident in speaking English and have more of an extensive vocabulary, I would strongly recommend my class- 'All about Adjectives- Creating clever, creative and captivating writing.' This is an ongoing class and can be joined and left at any time. Each week there will be a new image to look at and discuss. Teacher expertise and credentials
Hello, my name is Carlin King. I am a Year 1 teacher living and working in the United Kingdom. I have been a primary school teacher for more than ten years and love being part of the formative years. I have been trained in a number of different phonetic programmes including RWInc (Read, Write Inc).
My greatest passion is teaching children to read and write. As a child, I loved to write stories. I found it came naturally to me as I was a total book worm. However, as a teacher, I have seen that many children struggle with creativity, vocabulary and sentence structure when it comes to their writing. When children have both a writing model and an interest in the subject matter - that is when creative writing takes shape. Engaging and exciting themes, fun and well-written books and fascinating historical events and characters are just some of the subjects I like to use in my writing lessons. These classes will be for primary school children roughly between the ages of 5-8. Basic phonetic knowledge needs to be there as we can then sound out and build sentences together.
I am a firm believer in teaching phonics when it comes to fluent and confident reading. I have been teaching children to read throughout my teaching career and have had many experiences in different phonetic programmes. I decided to create my own phonic reading scheme, using what I know works, and make it engaging and exciting for children.
I believe teaching is about having fun and allowing children to get emersed in a subject. As a teacher, I strive to be a guide - allowing children to let their interest and curiosity drive their learning. As a child, I loved school and was privileged to go to more than one school as I spent my childhood living in different parts of Africa. I was born in Nambia and then moved to Ghana when I was nine years old. As a teenager, I attended a wonderful boarding school in South Africa. I now live in England with my husband and two gorgeous babies.
